Nursery

In Nursery, the children have been learning about keeping safe by the road during ‘Road Safety Week’. We talked together about the importance of holding hands with a grown up whilst near the road. We also had a discussion together about people who keep us safe by the road ‘Our Road Safety Heroes’, including parents and the Lollypop lady. The children enjoyed role playing on the bikes with some children taking on the role of the Lollypop lady.

Reception

In Reception, the children have been on a local visit to complete a ‘Nativity Trail’. They put in to practise their knowledge of how to keep safe by the road by listening to adults and being sensible whilst on their walk. They remembered to look left and right before crossing the road.

Year 1

In Year One, the children have continued to develop their road safety sense by taking part in a local visit to learn about the Morley Town Hall as part of their history work.

The children in year one had the opportunity to take part in a scooter club after school club. They enjoyed learning basic skills and taking part in games.

Year 2

In Year Two, Children have been learning about keeping safe and managing risk as part of their PSHE work. As part of this work, they thought about road safety and recalled their knowledge learnt in previous years about how to keep safe by the road. The children in year two had the opportunity to take part in some scooter training led by the Travel Team and also an after-school scooter club. Even the wet weather, did not dampen their enthusiasm!

Year 3

In Year Three, Children have been learning about the rainforest and air pollution. They thought about how air pollution can affect the environment that we live in. The children also took part in some scooter training led by the Travel team. They learnt about how to scoot and stop safely and how to use a scooter safely on the roadside.

Year 4

In Year Four, the children have been learning about electric circuits and switches in science. They thought about how everyday items such as traffic lights and pedestrian crossings work on a circuit to ensure our safety on the road.

The Year Four children attend swimming sessions weekly at the local swimming baths. They are sensible whilst on their walk and remind each other of the highway code on their journey to ensure everyone is safe.

Year 5

In year Five, the children have been on a local visit to the Beryl Burton Memorial garden. She was a famous cyclist born in 1937 and died in 1996. She set the woman’s record for the 12hr time trial. The children thought about how cycling promotes a healthy and active lifestyle.

Year 6

In year Six, the children have been taking part in Bikeability led by Cycle North. They learnt about basic bike skills and practiced these on the playground initially before then moving on to riding around the local area on the roadside in a safe and responsible manner.

At Seven Hills, we pride ourselves on being a green school and are currently working hard to achieve our Eco-Flag award by setting achievable targets that help us to look after the planet, care for our local environment and become more sustainable.

 

Children take part in regular litter picking patrols to keep our school environment tidy and free from litter that can be potentially hazardous to our local wildlife.

 

As part of the Eco-Schools award, our Eco Warriors set the target of having more indoor plants in school. Each year group cares for their own class plant; learning about where in the world they can be found as well as the conditions they need to grow well.

 

Our Eco club have helped us to become more sustainable by feeding and watering our home - grown rhubarb on the school allotment. Children in Year 3 loved using our fresh rhubarb to make delicious muffins which they got to share with family and friends.

 

Over the course of the spring term, children from across Key Stage 2, have taken part in a special project; learning about the problem of food waste and ways in which we can tackle this to be more sustainable while benefiting our local community. Children, in our Eco club, have set up a social enterprise to provide food to the community via a weekly stall. In setting up their food stall, children have learnt about the problem of food poverty, developed their own logo and slogan as well as designed posters to promote the stall. As a partner school the children took part in an education programme by Rethink Food Academy. Some of the children went to the opening event of their premises in the White rose Shopping Centre. 

Our children have given up their own time to run the stall and have loved being part of such a worthwhile project.
