Nursery 

Our youngest pupils have been developing early social skills and are becoming more outgoing with unfamiliar people, in the safe context of their setting. These skills were showcased during the rehearsal period and our wonderful production of the Foundation Stage Nativity. We were so proud to see the pupils show more confidence in new social situations.

Reception

Children in Reception are developing the skills to work together and play cooperatively. They explore engaging activities with their peers where they have planned opportunities to embed turn taking skills with others and explore the concept of sharing. Pupils can then reflect whilst reading The Little Red Hen and question why she wouldn’t share her bread in the story.

Year 1

Pupils have been hooked by the Pixar Inside Out animation and have enjoyed exploring emotional wellbeing and different types of feelings. They have thought about how to recognise and talk about their emotions and developed a varied vocabulary of words to use when talking about their own and others’ feelings.

Year 2

Building on the prior learning in the Early Years, children in Year 2 have deepened their understanding of friendships and working cooperatively together. They have explored strategies to solve problems that might arise within friendships through role play and gained an understanding of how important friendships are in making us feel happy. This is fundamental for later learning around positive behaviour and attitudes and healthy relationships.

Year 3

During their Topic on Rainforests in Year 3, the PSHE learning on Identity, Equality and Society allowed pupils to value the similarities and differences between themselves and others. They acquired an understanding of what is meant by ‘community’ when studying a variety of tribes and reflected on how it felt to belong to a group.. This will help pupils to comprehend later in the year, within our school and also the wider society, why we expect to be treated with respect by others, and in turn, they should show respect.

Year 4

Whilst focussing on drug, alcohol and tobacco education, Year 4 pupils have thought about the risks and effects of drinking alcohol. Pupils have looked at a simple diagram of the body and together explained where alcohol goes in the body once it is consumed. High quality discussions took place around some of the effects this might have on the body and children created a thought shower showcasing their ideas. Their thinking was then challenged as they placed drinking alcohol on a risk continuum to show which situations were the most risky.

Year 5

Building on from their prior learning in Phase A around identity and society, pupils in Year 5 have studied the meaning of diversity and prejudice. Children have been thinking about discrimination and how that makes people feel and enjoyed watching the ‘Arsenal Rainbow Laces’ film as a hook for discussion. They cooperatively worked together as a group to look at discriminatory statements and made freeze fames to show how this can make someone feel. High quality discussion was facilitated for them to explore the type of discrimination being used. This learning will progress further next year when children will look at people who have moved to the UK to seek refuge.

Year 6

Year 6 have begun to deepen their understanding of the risks relating to drug, alcohol and tobacco use. They began to explain how the risk of the drug taking itself depends on the person using the drug and the situation, when and where the person is and who they are with. They explored this idea using a ‘risk triangle’. Pupils also learned about ways to manage risk in situations involving drug use and made clear links to their prior learning this year on ‘Keeping Safe and Managing Risks’ and the practical steps they can take in a range of different contexts to improve or support respectful relationships.
