Nursery

In Nursery, the children have been reading ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen. The children have enjoyed listening to the story during ‘Story Time’ and have even enjoyed recreating their own ‘Bear Hunt’.

Reception

In Reception, the children have been enjoying their new phonic lessons using our new DfE validated Systematic Synthetic Phonics scheme, Essential Letters and Sounds. The children have been learning some of the Phase 2 and 3 sounds and are loving the mnemonics and actions.

Year 1

In Year 1, the children have been working hard to apply their developing phonic knowledge using the new Essential Letters and Sounds scheme. The children have been using their Apply Activity books to apply and consolidate their learning.

Year 2

Love of Language is a key characteristic which underpins our school’s Curriculum Intent. Children are encouraged to read for enjoyment, challenge and understanding of the text. In Year 2, the children enjoy their one-to-one reading sessions where they practice skills such as decoding, segmenting, and blending and reading aloud fluency and confidence.

Year 3

In Year 3, some of the children have been working hard in their Toe by Toe Reading interventions to develop their phonic decoding skills and increase their confidence and self-esteem when reading aloud.

Year 4

Some of the children in Year 4 visited Morley Library to participate a Comic Book Event. Children visited the library and were able to choose some comics to read and enjoy. The children then brought these to school and added them to class libraries or donated them to our Little Free Library box at the front of school for all children in our community to enjoy.

Year 5

Guided Reading is an important collaborative reading session the children enjoy at Seven Hills. In Year 5, the children have been focusing on reading comprehension skills such as prediction and comparing, contrasting and commenting during their guided reading sessions.

Year 6

In Year 6, the children have been learning about The Romans, linked to their class novel - Thieves of Ostia, using textbooks from the Leeds Library Service. In History and during their Improve write, they have been retrieving, recording and presenting information in order to develop their understanding of what life was like during the Roman era.
